蝶阀主要是由阀体、阀门板、阀杆与驱动装置等组成。旋转手柄，使驱动装置带动阀门板绕阀体内一固定轴转动，通过阀门板转动角度的大小来改变流道的流通面积从而达到启闭和节流的目的。目前使用的蝶阀多为软密封蝶阀，其特点是结构简单、重量轻、维修方便、成本造价低；缺点是使用温度低，密封性能差，当运行时间较长后橡胶密封圈易老化而失去弹性造成渗漏，故多用于低温低压的循环水管道系统中。但随着技术的发展，德国卡尔已自主研制出硬密封蝶阀，使得蝶阀的工作温度和压力有较大的提高。
